Happy 490th Birthday Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés

Join us on Saturday, February 28, as we celebrate the 490th birthday of the city’s founder, the Adelantado don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (1519-1574). It was Menéndez who led the expedition from Spain in 1565 that founded St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the United States. In honor of the Adelantado’s birthday, the Department of Heritage Tourism will on that magical evening host its annual Menéndez Noche de Gala in the exquisite Lightner Museum, where, in the midst of priceless art and sculpture, guests will enjoy the colorful ceremonies. The event has become a tradition of elegance, with fine dining and dancing for all who participate in the memorable evening. The Noche de Gala allows the City to broaden awareness of its heritage, emphasizing the role that Spain and Spanish settlers played in establishing the first permanent colony in what is now the United States. And, it gives us a great excuse to throw a sixteenth century masque, something no other city in this country can do. Over the years, more and more guests who attend the ball have adopted costumes of the era. It makes for an elegant affair, held in a magnificent setting. Your participation helps us to celebrate our history and your purchase of a ticket contributes to preserving the City of St. Augustine’s resources. Please join us on Saturday, February 28, 2008 at 6:30 pm. Cost for the Noche de Gala is $160.00 for City of St. Augustine Heritage Fund members and $185.00 for non-members. For those who would like to attend the cocktail reception, the cost is $35.00 per person. Dress is black tie or 16th century period attire.
