TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 12, 2009) – “In light of the current budget shortfall, all organizations and businesses must evaluate spending and preserve resources wherever possible. VISIT FLORIDA has always been a good steward of public funding—matching every $1 of state funding with $2 in private sector contributions.
Two weeks ago today, we made definitive strides to improve efficiency and save money. By cutting costs, we were able to immediately redirect $1.2 million into the advertising budget. This includes more than $800,000 for and economic stimulus campaign that will have a positive impact on travel and revenue to the Sunshine State.
Tourism is the driver of Florida’s economy, contributing more than $3.9 billion to our state in 2007. But visitors don’t just show up, it takes a lot of hard work to bring them here. The investment in VISIT FLORIDA and tourism marketing is worthwhile—for every $1 invested in tourism marketing, more than $3 comes back to Florida in tax revenue.
I acknowledge the difficult decisions the Legislature must make to balance the budget this Session and a continued investment in tourism marketing will be an important part of the solution.”
